Kung Fu Clothing
Famous wushu master Kung Fu Wushu on kung fu clothing base of huaquan (blossomed fist), zhaquan (fist of Zha), paoquan (cannon fist) hongquan (fist of stream), piguaquan (fist of chopping and hanging), shaolinquan (fist of Shaolin temple) and some others created a new sport competitional style changquan (long fist). On kung fu clothing base of five style of Guangdong province (styles of Hong, Cai, Li, Liu and Mo families) it was created new sport computational style Tai Chi Video(southern fist). Names of movements were changed, as a result movements lost mental contents: realy, "crushing mountain strike" is different from "fist bang on a palm". During "Great Cultural Revolution" (1966-1976) wushu lovers were repressed for "indulging of feudal survivals". But in this time popularity of wushu un foreign countries began increase due to kung fu movies. For in admission of decreasing of international prestige wushu was let alone.
The current Abbot of Shaolin the venerable has been in place for 10+ years now. He or the Chinese government have just cleared all the schools and the village surrounding Shaolin allowing only one to be there, the official Chinese Government Shaolin Temple training School. All schools, some numbering up to 8000 students, have been moved to the nearby major city of Kerfeng ( possibly wrong spelling, right sound ). Shaolin and the area around it is being prepared to be possibly a tourist and martial art trap or a heritage site. Time will tell.
The most curious thing about Wu Shu is that they actually import Muay Thai fighters to train Wu Shu fighting. In a way it is in tradition of 'learning' from the enemy. For many centuries leading up to the 20th, Kung Fu fighters and Muay Thai fighters challenged each other to prove which style was superior. This was a regular challenge between the two traditional styles and fighters for the honour of the style and country. Death in these was not unusual.
Shaolin's 1st Golden Era started with the ascension to the throne of the Tang Dynasty son who they saved. The second Golden era of Shaolin came during the Ming Dynasty with much cooperation between the Emperors Palace and Shaolin. Now with the full force of the Chinese Government behind them, efforts to have Wu Shu in the Olympics and over 1 billion people training in Wu Shu, Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Chi Kung, we can consider this the third golden era not only for Kung Fu and Wu Shu but for all peaceful martial arts ( I believe that violent and aggressive MA are a recessive breed ). As a martial artist in body, heart and spirit, it is a good time to be alive!
Many martial arts acknowledge, even boast to be influenced by Shaolin. What is true and what note is irrelevant. In today's age it would be impossible to extract what influenced what, where and how. It is more important that the spirit of Shaolin is alive in many different forms. Be it in Shaolin Wu Shu, be is Shaolin derived Kung Fu/Wing Chung or even the 'Fist of China' as was Karate once known; Shaolin is in the spirit and heart not in the strength of your punch and as such should be celebrated.
Shaolin Kung Fu is a way of health, a way of life and a way of being, we just use martial arts as an exercise!
Zhao and other 100 physical teachers received professional training of Kung fu in August this year. After the training, Zhao taught Kung fu to his students during the physical training course for about two hours each week.
Lu Guipu, an official with the Shenyang Education Bureau, said currently more than 10,000 students from over 50 schools in the city have received training of Kung fu, and more schools will be added to the program to promote Kung fu, the country's intangible heritage, in the coming years.
Lu said more training programs on Kung fu will be held for the city's physical teachers next year to meet the demand for professional teachers.
What is Shaolin Kung Fu?
Although Chinese Martial Arts have been in existence for thousands of years, the famous Indian Buddhist monk, Kung Fu Shirt (DaMo), is often credited with the founding of Shaolin Kung Fu. About 1,500 years ago, Bodhidharma traveled to China and eventually founded the now famous Shaolin Temple in the Kung Fu Shirt Mountains of Henan Province, Northern China.
Shaolin Kung Fu was developed as a way for the Buddhist monks of the Kung Fu Shirt to keep physically fit while practicing their meditation. They also discovered that the martial arts were effective in defending the temple and repelling bandits and robbers. Thus, the Buddhist monks incorporated martial training into their Buddhist discipline.
Benefits of Shaolin Kung Fu
Today, the Western world is discovering the health, physical, mental and spiritual benefits of practicing Shaolin Kung Fu. The practice leads to the coordination of the three components of the individual - the physical, mental and spiritual. It is an aerobic exercise that creates Yang energy, helping to relieve tension and stress. It helps sharpen the mind and create greater focus and concentration in the individual. Most importantly, with consistent training, Shaolin will cultivate great spiritual awareness.
Stance training is perhaps the most fundamental type of training for almost all forms of martial arts. Our training also places a great deal of emphasis on acquiring the appropriate feeling of balance and stability.
The stances are
Bow and arrow
Stepping trains movement. There are set series of moving exercises that develop body coordination, leg strength and reaction. Some examples of the basic training positions include:
Horse stance to Horse Stance
Swinging horse (pivot on ball and swing into opposite facing horse stance)
Swinging horse variation (shovel step then pivot)
Advancing horse (kick up with heel, spring off back leg and kick down to horse)
do NOT raise in height as you kick up and as you move
do NOT move your body to your support leg as you kick up with heel
advance forward with each horse
Horse stance to Bow and Arrow Stance
Side to side
Sink, pivot on ball of right foot (or left)
Drive off ball, do not raise heel, turning to left (or right)
Front foot does NOT move
Rear foot points 45 degrees to front and back leg is straight
Start in horse, turn to bow
Step up with rear leg, then out 45 degrees to horse
Stay low as you move
Turn to bow stance (front leg is leg you just moved)
Four corner Stepping
One leg remains planted (some pivoting on ball of foot of course)
Start in horse
Side to side (facing one corner of the "Square")
Step up rear leg and step out to next corner in horse stance
